Built around the music
Maqam Academy connects Arabic maqam theory, hearing, microtonal tuning, notation, keyboard interaction, Practice and structural analysis in one interface.
Study complete maqam structures and their directional forms.
Explore the melodic building blocks that form maqam structures.
Hear and adjust quarter-tone behavior using cents and comma-based tuning.
Study the original frameworks BRoM © Maqam Academy and RoRM © Maqam Academy, then reinforce recognition through interactive Practice exercises.
Inside Maqam Academy
Maqam Academy brings notation, tuning, keyboard interaction and structural analysis into one connected study environment. Open a maqam, examine how it is built, and move naturally into the ajnas and pitch details behind it.
Click any view to enlarge.
Move between scale structure, tuning, keyboard and directional forms while keeping the maqam itself at the center.
Follow notes, intervals and directional changes on the staff, with playback and interaction connected to the same pitch model.
Explore ajnas as structural units with their interval patterns, notation and keyboard placement, then connect them back to maqam construction.
Learn the system, not only the notes
Maqam Academy is built for deeper study of Arabic maqam theory. Detailed descriptions, interval and structural analysis, Maqam relationships, derivations, modulations, Ajnas, quarter-tone tuning, Keys X-Ray, Practice and interactive notation are brought together so that each maqam can be studied as part of a connected musical system.
Instead of stopping at a list of notes, you can examine how a maqam is organized, how its ajnas relate to its scale degrees, how ascending and descending forms differ, and how one maqam connects to another according to the Maqam Academy database and analytical model.
The Building Rules of Maqam (BRoM) © Maqam Academy are an original theoretical framework and add a dedicated structural approach for examining how maqamat are built from Root Ajnas, Upper Ajnas, overlapping structures and important structural intervals. BRoM is used within the Maqam Academy model to support a more precise understanding of maqam construction and to make those rules easier to study and practise.
You can work through the Academy independently. Read the descriptions, listen to the pitches, compare structures, play the interactive keyboard and staff, and practise at your own pace. No teacher is required to begin or to use the learning system. Teachers can also use the same tools to explain and demonstrate maqam in lessons, classrooms and higher education.
Study the theory. Hear the intervals. Play the maqam. Understand the structure.
